Requisition Number 17-0082
Title Summer Intern - Digital and Interactives
Job Type Full Time Temporary
Union Unaffiliated
Location Denny
City Seattle
State WA
Work Schedule Variable- Flexibility Required
Description The digital intern will work on web and data projects under the supervision of our newsroom interactives team. Applicants can expect a full workload that includes building small and large projects - everything from tools, data visualizations and games, to alternate story forms and creative approaches to long-form narratives. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with our Pulitzer Prize-winning web production team, gaining first-hand experience with the Seattle Times’ digital news tools and homepage production process.
Requirements Interns are typically juniors, seniors or graduate students attending a four-year college or university. However, this is not a requirement: we believe that digital journalists can come from all kinds of paths before they get to a newsroom. Applicants from diverse or under-served backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

For this internship, you'll work with our toolkit, which primarily means HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You should have some programming experience, and be familiar with the web and its capabilities, but we don't have a requirement for specific languages. If you speak PHP, Ruby, Python, or something else, we will teach you how to use our tools.

Although development may be an important part of the job, we are also interested in candidates with interest in other areas of expertise, such as (but not limited too) mapping, design, SQL, social media outreach, and conversational UI. This is a small team, and many other digitally-related skills may help us grow in new areas. If in doubt, make a case for your specialty, and we'll consider it.

This internship runs for 10 weeks and is a paid position.
The Seattle Times is family owned and operated, dedicated to the community we serve and proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
