The Seattle Times is excited to announce a new Sports Reporter role in our newsroom! In this role, you will cover Seattle’s most popular team, the Seahawks, and the NFL, working with The Seattle Times’ lead Seahawks/NFL reporter in one of America’s most vibrant sports cities and regions. Successful applicants will be proven digital and print journalists who are equally adept at spot news, analysis, story-telling and enterprise. This role calls for self-starters who possess strong news judgment and excellent verbal, analytic and writing skills, along with the ability to work all stories under pressure within assigned deadlines.

 

Responsibilities

  • Reporting and producing content for all platforms related to their coverage area, including breaking news, features, and taking photos/video.
  • Analyzing traffic numbers, social media metrics and digital conversion trends to enhance decision-making on what type of content to produce and when.
  • Promoting content, reporting and subscription offers on social media channels.
  • Developing exclusive sources and storylines.
  • Building digital stories with clickable headlines that include links, tags, multimedia and SEO.
  • Finding compelling stories that haven't been covered nationally or locally.
  • Filling in whenever and wherever called upon, and having the ability to write about any number of subjects.
Requirements

Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ reporting experience at a daily newspaper or website, including sports reporting.

Education: Bachelor’s degree, journalism major preferred.

  • Local sports knowledge or familiarity
  • Social media platform experience and skillset (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and other emerging social networks)
  • Ability to post stories online using WordPress or other content-management systems; creating hyperlinks; attaching photos and video; understanding use of metadata, taxonomy, SEO and metrics. Additional Requirements and Information
  • The job requires travel, use of a personal vehicle (a valid drivers’ license and vehicle liability insurance coverage is required).
  • The work schedule varies but typically includes days, weekends and evenings and is subject to change as events change and sports news breaks.
  • Reporters at The Seattle Times are represented by Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild/Communications Workers of America.
  • On a post-employment offer-basis, a criminal background check and a drug screen are part of our hiring process for this job.
