Work Schedule Monday thru Friday, some weekends req'd

The Seattle Times, a family-owned, Pulitzer-Prize winning media company, is looking for a full-time staff travel-and-outdoors writer who can provide outstanding coverage of the Pacific Northwest’s vibrant outdoors adventures and travel experiences in the area, and select out-of-region locations. The ideal candidate would be adventurous and able to take part in and report on a diverse selection of experiences with a critical eye, from day walks for people with kids, to mountaineering with experts. Strong reporting skills are a must, and first consideration will be given to journalists who can write with personality and voice.

We are excited to announce an immediate staff reporter opening for a Travel and Outdoors Writer who will develop enterprise projects (reported stories, essays, long-form, comprehensive digital projects) and ensure that all stories are fully optimized for digital presentation with related links, video, maps and other components. Often, a staff photographer will be unable to join the writer while traveling, so photo/video skills are a plus. In addition, the writer will keep atop national/international travel-and-outdoors trends and should be able to place what’s happening locally within a larger context. They must be willing and able to report with a tight budget, while maintaining an independent stance (The Seattle Times does not accept free travel offers).

Using metrics and social media, the writer will actively seek to build readership and deepen engagement. This demanding position requires superior organization and time-management skills, the ability to file quickly and accurately on deadline and working knowledge and interest in all types of travel and outdoors-adventuring.

The writer will be expected to represent The Seattle Times publicly at events and in the digital sphere, and to contribute to newsroom-wide initiatives. Similarly, the writer will be asked to contribute to the general news operation at times, potentially pitching in on big breaking news and occasionally covering off-hours metro news shifts.

  • Three or more years' experience in reporting, preferaby with a daily newspaper or website.
  • College degree in journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have the ability to analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, fairness, etc., under pressure and on deadline.
  • Must have the ability to write clearly, accurately and creatively on multiple platforms.
  • Must have the ability to write stories using Methode, WordPress or other content management systems used by the newsroom. Includes creating hyperlinks; attaching photos and video; understanding the use of metadata, taxonomy, search engine optimization and metrics; and other, yet-to-be developed digital reporting skills. Requires the ability to effectively and consistently add metadata and taxonomic information to all content types.
  • Must have experience using Smartphones, tablets or other Web-enabled devices to monitor news, file stories from the field, and cover breaking news.
  • Requires the ability to travel to events and to meetings with sources in all types of weather, and to gather information from documents and databases, as well as from interviews. Must be willing to travel and work unusual schedules when news coverage demands it.
  • Position requires use of personal vehicle. Employee is required to maintain a valid driver’s license as well as the following limits of liability insurance: $100,000 bodily injury (BI), $300,000 aggregate BI; $100,000 property damage (PD); or $300,000 single limit.

A drug test and background check are required on a post-offer basis.

Due to the nature of the beat, the position requires some nights and weekends.
