General Summary of Responsibilities:

This position is a member of the Executive Team and works with executive team to develop and execute the information technology strategies, operations and financial goals.

The VP of IT provides strategic direction and has overall responsibility for the planning, advancement, delivery, and operation of all systems, applications, and technology. This leader reports to the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, and will manage the entire IT department of approximately 50 people. The primary areas of responsibility include Infrastructure & Operations, Software Engineering and Enterprise Applications.

Primary Functions & Duties: 

  • Working with the Office of the Publisher to maximize all advertising and partnership revenue and enhance profitability. 
  • Manage and develop a strong IT management team. 
  • Ensure peak performance and professional development. Maximize synergies between sub-departments for optimum performance of each. 
  • Work closely with News, Circulation, Advertising, Product, and Marketing in developing new technology products and features for our readers and solutions for our employees.
  • Refine and execute on the technology roadmap, ensuring the delivery of planned solutions in a simplified and supportable environment. Build strong architecture, planning, portfolio, project, solution delivery and operational management practices and processes.
  • Manage the department budget to ensure maximum returns on technology resources and the balanced utilization of in-house and sourced IT services.
  • Coordinate with the business leadership team to confirm and prioritize the portfolio of IT work and services ensuring that IT is poised to deliver on its most critical initiatives and operations.
  • Develop, retain, & recruit staff with the right technical, functional and personal abilities to achieve the Information technology goals and initiatives.

Proven ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional efforts and deliver successful outcomes.

Proven business relationship management and change management expertise.

IT leadership in environments with digital publishing technologies &digital products/assets a plus.

Strong IT teambuilding and organizational development experience.

Job Specifications:

Education: College degree required.

Experience: Minimum 5-10 years previous IT management experience with at least three years in a top-level position. Newspaper or media experience desirable, but not necessary.

Skill & Abilities: Demonstrated leadership, proven project management skills and oversight, solid strategic and analytical abilities are essential. Strong communication skills, judgment, and personal accountability are all essential. Requires experience with target audience marketing and audience demographics. Ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with others, at all levels, inside and outside the organization.

Supervision received: Minimal supervision. General, high level guidelines and expectations provided. Individual is expected to work independently, within company guidelines, to achieve goals established.

Pressure of work: Constant high level pressure to achieve IT goals.

Technology Experience:

It is desirable to have the following and/or similar application and technology stack management experience, with past hands-on background:

Business Applications – Salesforce (CRM, Customer Service, Subscriber billing, Advertising sales, etc.), Office 365 and SharePoint, Great Plains, CMS (Methode).

Infrastructure – AWS S3, Dell servers, Checkpoint Firewall, Windows and Apple desktops, Skype-based phone system and messaging.

Software Engineering - Microsoft development stack (business applications), LAMP development stack (digital product and solutions), Salesforce (cloud business applications), Wordpress, CSS, iOS and Android mobile application development.

Digital Offerings for Readers/Subscribers – website and paywall, online subscriptions, mobile applications, Google Analytics, Double Click for Publishers, digital photo/video storage and serving.
