General Summary of Responsibilities
Desk editors safeguard the credibility of The Seattle Times across all platforms by ensuring that all content is accurate, ethical and fair and is presented in a timely, compelling manner designed to maximize audience.

Major functions:
Edits across all platforms, including print, digital and mobile channels of The Seattle Times, social media and other platforms that may emerge in the future.
Safeguards the credibility of The Seattle Times by ensuring that stories are accurate, fair and balanced and make sense for readers.
Edits copy for factual, grammatical, usage, spelling, punctuation and Associated Press and Seattle Times style errors. Checks hyperlinks for accuracy and adds appropriate links to internal and external sources, if needed.
Adds accurate, effective taxonomy tags and other metadata to stories, photos, recipes and other content.
Demonstrates strong news judgment in making print and digital story selections or trims and in reviewing play of stories, photos, videos, blog posts and other content for digital readers.
Writes accurate, enticing headlines for print and writes clear, SEO-friendly headlines and useful summaries for the Web; posts stories to and demonstrates ability to post to Facebook, Twitter or blogs as needed; monitors performance of Seattle Times content on multiple social-media platforms and adjusts headlines and summaries to maximize audience.
Shifts gears quickly – from rimming to slotting to wire sorting to digital posting—to respond to changing needs.
Understands how the newsroom operates and works collaboratively and effectively within its teams and organizations. Keeps supervisors and other appropriate people informed of schedules, work in progress, problems and changes. Maintains good staff communication and relationships. Shares knowledge and ideas with other staffers.
Responds constructively to direction, suggestions and criticism.
Is punctual for assigned meetings and work shifts. Organizes time well and works on more than one task at a time when necessary.
Demonstrates a willingness to perform routine but necessary duties, but also seeks fresh ideas and approaches to improve procedures and workflows.
Keeps technological skills current, including ability to use internal company software such as Excel and Ulti-Pro and external social media tools such as Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and Instagram.
Scans hourly during shifts, looking for misspellings, factual errors, clunky headlines or summaries or accuracy issues. Works with producers to address problems.

Contact With Others: Extensive coordination with newsroom colleagues. Potential contact with consumers of our content as part of transparency and engagement.
Work Direction Over Others: Sometimes reviews work of colleagues in semi-supervisory capacity; contributes to employee evaluations when warranted.
Supervision Received: Works largely under direction of Universal Desk supervisor but must be able to work independently on advance copy or projects.
Pressure Of Work: Constant pressure to assure accurate information at all times and on all platforms, as well as pressure to maximize audience through effective headlines and summaries online and in print.
Scope: Uses judgment to ensure accurate, creative editing and presentation of news, sports and feature copy.
Impact: Contributes to the rise or fall of readership and to the news reputation of The Seattle Times. Often, the final safeguard ensuring fair, accurate, well-presented copy in news sections and online reports. Errors could result in embarrassment, financial loss or legal action against the newspaper.
Working Conditions: Sits in a noisy central position on a production desk, subject to continual verbal and electronic interruptions. Individual ergonomic adjustments must be made to prevent repetitive-strain injuries because of continual keyboarding.

Requirements Job Specifications:
Education: College graduate, with a degree in journalism or related fields or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Five (5) years of print and digital experience. Desk editing at a major metropolitan newspaper preferred.

Skills & Abilities:
Demonstrate excellent grammar and language skills.
Strong computer skills, including use of social media for news gathering and dissemination.
Ability to analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, fairness, etc., under pressure and on deadline.
Ability to write clearly and accurately and effectively on multiple platforms.
Fluency with content management systems for print and online.
Demonstrated understanding of Search Engine Optimization techniques and tools to maximize audience.
Ability to post to and monitor multiple social media channels in real time.
Maintain and sustain attention and effectively interact with people in extremely stressful situations.
Ability to travel to work in all weather conditions.
Ability to represent The Seattle Times in a professional manner.
High ethical standards demonstrated across all platforms.
Ability to effectively apply metadata taxonomy information to all Seattle Times content.
