The Seattle Times is seeking a part-time, temporary Photo Production Tech to join our team of award-winning journalists. Scheduled for a six-month assignment, this visual journalism specialist will have primary responsibility for downloading, color correcting, cropping and sizing photos for use on all Seattle Times news platforms. This individual will work under the direction of photo and video editors, assisting with picture and video editing, and handling special projects.  Other duties include building photo galleries and posting Times visual content online as well as on social media sites. The position also includes some administrative duties, such as processing invoices and ordering supplies, along with technical maintenance tasks.


Experience: Minimum two years’ experience at a daily news organization or equivalent relevant experience in journalism.

Education: A college degree, ideally in photojournalism, is preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Qualified candidates will have excellent news judgment and organizational skills.
  • A proficiency in using Adobe Photoshop is key, along with the desire to learn and master the use of Times publishing systems.
  • Candidates must have a familiarity with and ability to post to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • Excellent grammar and language skills are critical, along with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and remain calm under pressure.
  • Must be comfortable taking direction from photo editors and working collaboratively while having the confidence and skill set to tackle many tasks alone.
  • Candidates must have excellent communication skills and work well with a wide variety of people, including photographers, reporters, editors, readers, etc.

This six-month position will include evening and weekend shifts. Flexibility is very important along with a willingness to embrace new technology.
