The Seattle Times is seeking a Senior Accountant. This role contributes to the success of The Seattle Times by being an integral part of the finance and accounting team. The team member will perform and supervise a wide variety of regular and recurring accounting functions requiring full professional competency. They will assist in the establishment and maintenance of accounting records, one or more accounting systems or modules and may be involved in special projects or analysis. They will participate in the monthly and annual closing and reporting processes.

Primary Functions and Duties:


• Maintain master records for the General Ledger account numbers and number hierarchy, including set up, deletion and blocking of accounts and ensuring that new accounts are properly reflected on the financial statements.
• Maintain cost centers, departments and other segments of accounting records.
• Open and close periods for General Ledger, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable and purchasing modules of the Seattle Times primary accounting system. Open and close fixed asset modules of Affiliates.
• Coordinate with other Finance personnel as needed.
• Create and maintain financial accounting reports as needed.
• Perform preliminary review of assigned income statement and balance sheet accounts prior to closing. Ensure account balances are properly stated. Investigate and correct any differences as needed.
• Maintain fixed asset detail for all companies, including acquisitions, dispositions, depreciation, and assets under capital leases.
• Prepare and enter monthly recurring entries. Notify the originator(s) of the entries prior to expiration of the schedule period to obtain new information for repeat entries.
• Prepare periodic general ledger balance sheet account reconciliations, as well as adjusting entries related to the reconciliations.
• Calculate the monthly provision for federal income tax and record in General Ledger.
• Maintain and update various checklists and reports, including, but not limited to, monthly account reconciliation checklist, monthly task checklists, year-end closing checklists, year-end audit prepared by client (PBC) list, prepare and update monthly variance reports, both income statement and balance sheet.
• Assist in preparation of responses to external auditors as needed.
• Prepare quarterly analytical review of The Seattle Times balance sheet.
• Ensure the proper timing and application of revenue recognition per GAAP standards.
• Preparation and distribution of the monthly and quarterly financial reports of the Seattle Times and its Affiliates, including comparative Income Statements, consolidating Balance Sheets, Revenue Reports and Management Reports.
• Act as a primary source of general accounting system expertise. Identify issues and solution and define system requirements, participate in upgrades as needed.
• In conjunction with Operations personnel prepare monthly inventory adjustments and review inventory activity for discrepancies and reasonableness.
• Prepare monthly entries for waste sales, accrued excise taxes, accrued postage, accrued liabilities, deferred charges and monthly variance reports.
• Participate in preparation of various compliance efforts, including monthly excise taxes, Federal income taxes and estimated payments, Pension and benefit plan reporting and Government Census Department reporting.
• Set annual goals for their own progress and contribute to the development of department goals.
• Assist in the finance department budgeting and forecasting as needed.
• Prepare special reports and finance projects geared toward improvements in processes and data measurement as needed.

Requirements Qualifications:

• 4+ years of relevant experience, either public accounting or private industry.
• BA/BS in accounting, finance, or related field or equivalent experience required.
• Public accounting audit experience a plus.
• Federal Income Tax and Washington State excise tax experience a plus.
• Experience with integrated accounting software packages, Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP) strongly preferred.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, principally Excel required. Advanced Excel skills strongly preferred and SQL familiarity a plus.
• Able to work independently or with others to solve or recommend solutions to problems.
• Able to participate in discussion among diverse participants to solve problems and implement solutions.
• Must possess excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
