Requisition Number 18-0033
Title Columnist
Job Type Full Time Regular
Union Guild
Location Denny
City Seattle
State WA
Work Schedule Monday thru Friday, 9am-6pm, some flex required

The Seattle Times, a family-owned, Pulitzer Prize-winning news organization, is looking for an experienced Columnist who will provide a strong voice on issues of race, class, and equity. We’re looking for a writer who is thoughtful yet provocative, who will probe sensitive issues in a way that causes people to think, and who prompts deep conversations, both public and intimate. We expect this columnist to produce deeply reported pieces, spending time in the community to build relationships, gain trust and find nuanced ideas. And we are looking for a digitally savvy journalist comfortable with public exposure, whether online or in person at public events.

Seattle and its surrounding county are home to an increasingly diverse population; more than half of newcomers are immigrants, and more than 170 languages are spoken. It’s also a place facing rapid gentrification, stark income disparity and a crisis of homelessness – all issues with direct connections to issues of race, class and equity. And while the area is known for its progressive politics, its people can be reluctant to speak openly about these issues. All of that demands a columnist who can practice diplomacy and still mount a pointed argument; who can coax others to talk and still project a strong writer’s voice; who can hold a mirror up to society while maintaining a thick skin when the examination is reversed. If this sounds appealing and you meet the requirements listed below, please apply at the link provided.

Note that this role is a salaried, union-affiliated Guild position that mandates dues be paid by the employee (per the Collective Bargaining Agreement) and will require a background check after the job offer.

**Please also submit writing samples, cover letter, and prospective column ideas here.
