Description The Seattle Times is offering a paid, 10-week summer internship in the News Graphics Department for students pursuing a career in visual journalism. Applicants can expect to have a full workload of daily explanatory graphics aimed for all areas in print and online. Opportunities also exist for our interns to take creative leadership roles in medium and large-scope projects. We look for well-rounded applicants who are flexible, forward thinking and able to participate comfortably in a collaborative environment. We expect a certain level of self-sufficiency coupled with the desire to develop and enhance existing skills. Graphics interns are encouraged to experiment and challenge themselves. We will actively push the areas of visual storytelling that can be improved, including reporting skills, organizing and editing skills, as well as the principles of drawing, rendering and design. A strong working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is required. Experience with diagrammatic illustration and the principles of visual communication is preferred. Working knowledge of WordPress, HTML, CSS and JavaScript is a plus. Interns are expected to work under deadline pressure, interact with all members of the newsroom and invest themselves in the entire journalistic process. They attend weekly training sessions given by members of a Pulitzer-Prize winning staff and will receive a skill-development plan and a staff mentor to support them in achieving it.
Requirements Internships are open to juniors, seniors and graduate students attending a four-year college or university. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to print or online visual journalism, possess social media skills and be digitally astute.
