Description

At The Seattle Times, you'll find work that matters.

Founded in 1896, The Seattle Times continues its tradition as a family-owned, Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper that cuts through the clutter and provide readers with timely, relevant news. We serve the Pacific Northwest with thoughtful, independent journalism that makes a real difference to our community. And as a media solutions company, we combine cutting-edge digital capabilities and service with the values and integrity of respected traditional media… with an established audience of 1.8 million.

The Seattle Times is seeking an Engagement Editor to join Education Lab, an ambitious, groundbreaking project that has significant impacts on public education in Washington state.  This grant-funded, 21-month position calls for a candidate who can help lead Education Lab’s award-winning effort to spark and nurture constructive conversation about education in Washington state, and to seek out community voices that can improve our journalism.

The editor’s duties include leading Education Lab’s social-media efforts, creating and carrying out engagement related to Education Lab stories, planning online and in-person events, building Education Lab’s audience, soliciting and working with guest writers, maintaining and building community partnerships, tracking and analyzing analytics, and experimenting with other engagement efforts. You’ll also be in charge of putting together a weekly newsletter of Education Lab content, and, when there’s time, reporting stories based on community interest. Strong multi-media skills and experience covering education are pluses as well.

Requirements

Experience: Must have a minimum of 1+ years’ experience in a daily news organization.

Education: Undergraduate degree in journalism or communications, or combination of related professional work experience.

Application information: Submit a cover letter, resume, and a writing proposal (1,000 words max) for how you would build on Education Lab’s efforts, along with some examples of relevant work. When ready, please submit this information here.

*To be considered, you must have a vehicle and auto insurance for work-related visits to other sites - or other reliable means of transportation available with little notice. As such, applicants must also have a valid driver’s license as well.

Our locally-owned company takes great pride in our impact to the community, as we have for over 120 years. We know this starts with our commitment to our employees, first and foremost. We offer multiple comprehensive health benefit plans for employees (and their families), a 401(k) retirement plan with matching, generous vacation/sick time off, annual wellness benefits, dependent care options, and much more. We continuously strive to provide a work-life harmony that encourages personal and professional growth at a company that breathes deeply held values of quality, independent journalism.
