POSITION TITLE: Assistant Cook
STATUS: Temporary
SUPERVISOR: Food Service Manager
SCOPE OF POSITION: Assist with the preparation of meals, snacks and other food handling, as well as ensuring the overall cleanliness of the kitchen.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Hold a current Food Handlers permit, to be on file in the kitchen and camp office
• Previous experience in food service or preparation
• Previous camp experience preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assistant Cook Duties:
• Assist the Food Service Manager with the preparation, cooking, and serving of all meals.
• Assist with the cleaning and care of the kitchen and all work equipment including but not limited to sanitizing tables and counters, sweeping and mopping floors, washing dishes, etc.
• Assist to unload, move and store supplies.
• Assist with all inventory procedures, ensuring all food in fridge, freezers and pantry are dated and properly handled according to safe food practices.
• Assist with dish room duties as requested.
• Assist in any area of the kitchen or dining room as requested.
General Duties:
• Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
• Work alongside and in agreement with the Divisional Youth Leaders, other divisional officers and special guests as directed.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers and campers.
• Encourage adherence to camp & Salvation Army policies and procedures.
• Ensure and provide for the supervision and physical/emotional safety of campers and staff.
• Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g. chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
• Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of your cabin and outside area.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Program Specialist, Divisional Youth Secretaries or camp director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• General knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices for food preparation and storage, as well as for special diets.
• Ability to perform tasks assigned and daily duties in a timely matter.
• Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
• Ability to communicate and interact well with co-workers and the public from diverse backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
• Responsible individual with a desire to work with youth.
• Self-starter.
• Team player.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
• Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
• Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on a continuous basis
• Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead
• Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to lift/unload/move food and supplies; lift dishes to their storage location; use kitchen equipment safely; operate electrical equipment and mechanical equipment; maintain appropriate inventory of food and supplies; operate dishwasher while maintaining appropriate temperature; determine cleanliness of dishes, food contract surfaces and kitchen area; assess condition of food
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• There may be phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
• May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.
• The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
• Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
• Works around dust, odor, and high noise levels.
Working conditions --equipment used:
• Dishwasher
• Kitchen equipment. *Will abide by and practice Oregon Labor Laws when working, including use of equipment, depending on age.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.
The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
