POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Lifeguard
STATUS: Temporary
SUPERVISOR: Lead Lifeguard, Program Director and Assistant Director
SCOPE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Lead Lifeguard provide a safe and fun swimming experience while adhering to state & local operating procedures for the pool.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must possess current standard life guard, CPR and First Aid certifications
• Must have a valid Driver’s License
• Previous camp experience preferred
• Previous lifeguard experience preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assistant Lifeguard Duties:

• Supervise all swimming activities during camp sessions and enforce pool rules.
• Assist in weekly swim test for campers on first day of camp.
• May plan and lead a swimming elective to teach campers to swim & earn their swimming bracelet.
• Assist in pool games for cabin activities and other scheduled swim events.
• Help vacuuming at minimum 1 pool each day on an alternating basis.
• Maintain cleanliness of pool house, pool deck and surrounding area.
• Help complete 3 water chemical tests for each pool daily just prior to mealtimes.
• Log cleaning supplies & equipment, testing chemicals and water recreation equipment.

General Duties:
• Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
• Work alongside and in agreement with the Divisional Youth Leaders, other divisional officers and special guests as directed.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers and campers.
• Encourage adherence to camp & Salvation Army policies and procedures.
• Ensure and provide for the supervision and physical/emotional safety of campers and staff.
• Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g. chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
• Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of your cabin and outside area.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the program director, Divisional Youth Secretaries or camp director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Strong ability to maintain constant awareness of swimmers and surroundings.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
• Strong use of judgement to determine if swimmers are safely and properly conducting themselves.
• Skill in the application of standard swimming, lifesaving, and resuscitation techniques.
• Ability to perform daily duties in a timely manner.
• Ability to communicate and interact well with co-workers and the public from diverse backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
• Ability to effectively give swimming instruction.
• Responsible individual with a desire to work with youth.
• Strong use of the English language in verbal and written communication.
• Self-starter.
• Team player.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
• Ability to operate telephone and/or radio.
• Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
• Ability to access and produce information form a computer.
• Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
• Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on a continuous basis
• Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead
• Ability to regularly lift up to 25 lbs. and on occasion up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to perform swimming rescues on swimmers in distress including approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people, which may require the removal of the swimmer from the water (who may weigh from 50-300lbs).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• There may be phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
• May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.
• The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
• Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
• Works around dust, odor, and high noise levels.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.
The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
