POSITION SUMMARY:
The Art Instructor encourages creative expression while nurturing artistic abilities. He or she monitors and educates participants on art technique and maintains a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.

The Art Instructor will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Bachelor’s degree or Certification in Art, Art History, Communications, Education, or related field
2. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work and interact with a diverse group of people in a positive and productive manner.
3. Minimum three years’ experience teaching or leading an art class or program
4. Must be at least 18 years of age

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide individual and small-group instruction to students of all ages with varying artistic abilities; make adjustments to class outlines and/or teaching approach to ensure student development.
2. Provide class outlines, lesson plans, and materials list to Creative Arts & Education Manager at least two weeks before class is scheduled to begin.
3. Display interest, dedication, and enthusiasm for improving the community through arts education.
4. Be well versed in various art forms and have excellent artistic, research, and organizational skills.
5. Maintains familiarity with current texts, materials, teaching aids and techniques, computer technology relative to courses within the discipline, and recommend their adoption when appropriate.
6. Share subject matter expertise on art theory, skills, methods and techniques, along with practical application of these areas, including demonstrations as appropriate.
7. Continuously improve curriculum, instructional techniques, and integrate best practices of instruction delivery.
8. Create a fun and safe instructional environment.
9. Provide corrective and positive feedback to students to ensure learning and a positive atmosphere
10. Teach scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time.
11. Maintain accurate attendance records and reporting procedures.
12. Ensure students have pieces prepared to display in the Art Exhibits.
13. Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
14. Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse.
15. Answer questions and interact with students, parents, volunteers and staff, displaying positive and proactive attitudes, behaviors and language.
16. Greet, introduce and welcome participants. Acquaint new students with class procedures. Deliver the class in a fun and interesting manner.
17. Communicate regularly with participants and parents.
18. Able to work independently with minimal oversight.
19. Maintain regular and punctual work attendance.
20. Attend staff meetings as required.
21. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
22. Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
23. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The position requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, standing, walking, and use of vision, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25-50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds. This employee may also be required to work weekends and evenings.

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:
The position requires talking to co-workers and clients and may require written communication or email to and from co-workers and clients.

Must have the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. Must have the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor, air-conditioned room with chairs on which to sit or room to stand.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS:
Students may be required to purchase their own supplies.
