The Cook works under the direction and supervision of the Food Service Manager. He/she is responsible for ensuring proper operation of the kitchen and assigned areas. Duties include, but are not limited to: updating inventory, food storage/rotation, ordering food/supplies (as budget permits), meal preparation, proper sanitation of assigned areas, Disaster Services food prep, donation pick-up and applicable reports. The Cook ensures compliance with all County Health Department permit standards and certification.

1. Understands the mission, organizational structure, and policy and procedures of The Salvation Army. Works cohesively with supervisors, Corps Officers and DHQ.
2. Supervises volunteers and others assigned.
3. Assists in maintaining an accurate inventory that includes supplies and food items (purchased, donated, and USDA). Ensures that food is stored and rotated as required by Health Department standards.
4. Assists in receiving orders and properly stores all kitchen related deliveries (donations, orders, supplies, etc.).
5. Assists in food donation pickups.
6. Communicates with supervisors regarding preventive maintenance, equipment repair, etc.
7. Prepares meals (breakfast, lunches, dinners, etc.) that are nutritious and well balanced.
8. Assists Supervisor in ensuring all fire and safety equipment is up to date and in accordance with code.
9. Assists in the maintaining of kitchen, dining room and other assigned areas to conform with all health laws, policies & procedures and other regulations pertaining to the operation of an institutional kitchen. Follows-up on safety and health inspections.
10. Performs other duties as necessary for the successful operation of the program.
11. Maintain accurate time keeping records that are reflective of duties performed under different grant/contracts.
12. Attends staff and program related meetings, conferences, and training as needed and required. Cooperates with supervisors in any other special projects as needed.
13. These duties may be changed in part or in full at any time at the Executive Director’s discretion, or as required because of program changes or needs.

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

1. Associate of Arts Degree in Culinary Services, or related field and one-year experience in residential services for adults. Applicable work experience in lieu of formal education will be considered.
2. Must be able to pass a complete and satisfactory background check.
3. Ability to drive and maintain a valid Class C California Driver’s License. Able to pass a TSA Driving Test and maintain a clean MVR.
4. Current CPR Certificate & TB Test.
5. Maintain an updated California Food Managers Certificate (Serve Safe) and other applicable required certificates.
6. Willing and able to maintain confidential information in accordance with Salvation Army and industry standards.
7. Ability to pass a physical health examination by a doctor.

1. Must be familiar with the safe operation of culinary equipment.
2. Ability to accurately calculate meal size and portions.
3. Ability to instruct and enforce sanitary working conditions.
4. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills in English.
5. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required.
6. Computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
7. Ability to email, fax, operate copy/print/scan machine.
8. Ability to work harmoniously with supervisors, coworkers, residents, outside agencies, and the public.
9. Excellent organizational, prioritizing, planning and problem-solving skills.
10. High ethics and integrity.
