POSITION SUMMARY:
The Life Guard is responsible for the health and safety of members and guests in attendance at the Aquatic facility, and is also responsible for the cleanliness of the aquatic facility.

The Kroc Center Hawaii Life Guard will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High School graduate or GED.
2. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification
3. First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
4. Water Safety Instructor Certification
5. Lifeguard Instructor Certification
6. At least 5 years lifeguard experience or previous lifeguard supervisory experience.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide all life-guarding services. Respond to emergency situations and if necessary administer CPR/First Aid. Prepare and submit accident/incident reports.
2. Assists with the scheduling of lifeguards to ensure that adequate coverage of pool areas are maintained during operating hours. Review all punch details reports for lifeguard staff and make sure that they are processing daily, time exception reports, absence reports, vacation requests, with Aquatic Director.
3. Assists with schedules, coordinates and conducts in-service training. Ensures that lifeguards are fully competent in first aid, CPR, and all water rescue techniques.
4. Keep the Aquatic Director informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments and repairs.
5. Interfaces with members and guests regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues. Provides input and feedback while responding to problems.
6. Ensures that aquatic programs are occurring as desired and assists the Aquatic Director with the overall management of swimming events.
7. Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents. Maintains a vigilant watch of the swimming pool areas in accordance with the operating procedures and takes necessary action to ensure the safety of all pool users and staff.
8. Patrol all areas and ensure that all areas are being used in the correct manner, making suitable adjustments as necessary.
9. Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning.
10. Administers First Aide.
11. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations.
12. Follows emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency.
13. Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas.
14. Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment. Report any damage or malfunction of equipment, pool, pool area or facility to Aquatic Director.
15. May assist in determining chlorine content and pH value of water, using water testing kit, and recording readings.
16. Provides general information on pool operations to members and guests.
17. Teaches swimming lessons.
18. Assist in the preparation and operation of events and activities, including the assembly and dismantling of equipment and minor repairs when required.
19. Ensure that lost property is handled and recorded in line with procedures.
20. Assist the Aquatic Director with the supervision of children’s activities including parties, play schemes and courses.
21. Assist in the opening and closing of the facilities when required and assist in monitoring the security of the premises at all times.
22. Provide excellent internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for guests through professional and courteous behavior.
23. Participate in all in-service trainings, orientations and other staff meetings as requested.
24. Perform housekeeping duties in and around the Aquatic Center, i.e. scrubbing, washing, picking up litter, etc.
25. Assume a schedule of flexible working hours, including weekends and evenings.
26. Practice safe work habits and contribute to the safety of self, Kroc Center Hawaii co-workers and the general public.
27. Ability to work effectively as a team player.
28. Complete applicable reports and records.
29. Be knowledgeable for all Emergency Disaster Evacuation Plan preparedness for the aquatics area, as directed by the Aquatics Director.
30. Maintain a neat, professional appearance.
31. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
32. Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
33. Perform other assignments/duties as directed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The candidate chosen for this position is frequently required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for long periods; uses hand to finger, handle, fee or operate lifesaving equipment. The employee will regularly lift, push, or pull persons or equipment over 100 pounds.

The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 50-75 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds. This employee may also be required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.
COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:
The position requires talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor; talking on the telephone; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other worksites; requires communication via the latest technologies.
The position requires the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The position also requires the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee regularly works under outdoor weather conditions, is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme hear; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations.
Attendance at trainings and conferences, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, may be required. Extensive travel is possible, including air travel, driving long distances, night driving, overnight travel, and extended travel of three days or more.
EQUIPMENT NEEDS:
Rescue hooks, rescue tubes, ring buoys, spine boards, c-collars, and respirator.
Chemical feeders, chemicals, pool vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, pool filters and other pool maintenance equipment

The candidate chosen for this position must have a valid driver’s license and insured transportation.

On an annual basis, employees are required to participate in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program.
