POSITION TITLE: Lead Camp Counselor
STATUS: Temporary
SUPERVISOR: Camper Specialist
SCOPE OF POSITION: Provide support, resources, supervision and motivation to counselors and supporting Counselors in Training (CITs).
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
• High School Diploma minimum requirement
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must have a valid Driver’s License
• Previous counseling experience preferred
• Prior leadership experience preferred
• Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead Counselor Duties:
• Help counselors, and supporting CITs, maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment at all times.
• Assist counselors and CITs in responding to specific needs, or problems, regarding camper’s daily camp activity.
• Manage and coach counselors and CITs to ensure the proper supervision procedures are being practiced.
• Spend time getting to know each counselor’s cabin every week to find where support is needed.
• Facilitate and assist in conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and appropriate responses for behavioral problems.
• Assist in the coordination and distribution of devotion materials & seeker forms between Division Youth Department and counseling staff.
• Lead a weekly devotion with counselors and CITs following a preset curriculum or applicable topics.
• Coordinate with Camper Specialist and leadership team to determine if a child needs to be sent home.
• Work in cooperation with leadership team and Nurse to ensure camper’s and counselors medical needs are met and coordinate possible medical transportation as needed.
• Directly supervise campers in activities and/or overnight in the event of a counselor’s absence.
General Duties:
• Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways in campers and staff.
• Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
• Assist with the implementation of summer camp staff orientation, including volunteers and guest staff.
• Work alongside and in agreement with the Divisional Youth Leaders, other divisional officers and special guests as directed.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers and campers.
• Encourage adherence to camp & Salvation Army policies and procedures.
• Ensure and provide for the supervision and physical/emotional safety of campers and staff.
• May be requested to drive or accompany hospital transport of camper or staff.
• Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g. chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
• Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of your cabin and outside area.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Youth Program Specialist, Divisional Youth Secretaries or camp director.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
• Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on an continuous basis
• Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• There may be phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
• May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.
• The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
• Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
• Works around dust, odor, and high noise levels.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.
The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
