Position Summary

Working with the Corps Officers and based on guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Cook will plan for and prepare two daily nutritious meals for the residents at the Booth Senior Bridge Home and as needed for Corps activities. The cook will also accommodate client’s special dietary needs due to medical or religious beliefs. The Cook will maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of all food preparation areas and Corps kitchen.

Essential Functions

1. Prepare two nutritious daily meals for the residents at the Booth Senior Bridge Home and Corps activities as needed.
2. Follow the preset mealtimes for the Booth Senior Bridge Home and assist in creating weekly menus for the program.
3. If needed, prepare modified meals for clients that have a special dietary need due to medical necessity or religious beliefs.
4. Responsible for preparing, serving, storing and handling food in accordance with Department of Public Health standards.
5. Requisition food supplies based on daily/weekly menu plans as required and maintain proper inventory food portion to support budget cost meal preparation.
6. Must maintain flexibility in working varying shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events.
7. Keep all food preparation areas and equipment clean and sanitary at all times, including proper cleaning of dishes, pots, pans, equipment, kitchen work areas, and food storage areas.
8. Responsible for effective food preparation and portioning for cost control.
9. Perform pre-safety checks and routine inspections of food equipment, report major repairs or services needed and all emergencies, accidents or equipment breakdown immediately to Corps Officers.
10. Maintain sinks, floors drains and storage areas clean and orderly.
11. Organize and rotate storage, using F.I.F.O. method.
12. Assist as needed with dropping off meals to Booth Senior Bridge Home utilizing Salvation Army vehicle.
13. Facilitate cooking classes for Booth Senior Bridge program participants to improve independent living skills.
14. Maintain good working relations with all Salvation Army employees, representatives, volunteers and visitors from other agencies.
15. Participate in ongoing trainings relevant to food handling and supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders or other relevant training to Booth Senior Bridge Home and/or Corps Programs.
16. Complete all other tasks as assigned by Corps Officers.
Requirements Minimum Qualifications

1. Successful completion of background screening.
2. Employment eligibility verification.
3. One-year cooking in an institutional or residential setting or equivalent experience.
4. A high School diploma or GED accepted.
5. Must possess a valid Class C California Driver’s License and clean MVR.
6. Read, write, speak and understand English.
7. Maintain valid CA Food Handler Certification.
