CLASSIFICATION: Part Time, On Call, Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY: The primary function of the Day Camp Counselor is to supervise both large and small groups of students and lead activities for all Day Camp programming while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students. Day Camp Counselor will be charged with maintaining the safety, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, character, and skill development of all students. Counselors will plan and carry out activities, promote student participation, and be asked to teach and/or demonstrate the following: character building activities, Bible based stories and truths, sports skills, arts and crafts, educational concepts, musical concepts, and various games.

The candidate selected for this position will follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.

The candidate selected for this position will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Demonstrated experience working with elementary to high school students.
3. Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written.
4. Ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers and peers.
5. Genuine holistic concern for children including their spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual, and physical well-being.
6. Live a life of integrity and practice the behavior they advocate to children.
7. CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
8. TB Test Clearance required.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.
1. Actively supervise large and small groups of students. Work effectively as a team player.
2. Assist students with academic material in grades K-12.
3. Plan, develop and implement activities, lesson plans, and specialized theme events that keep students safe, build relationships and are fun under the guidance of the Day Camp Coordinator & Youth Ministry/Day Camp Director.
4. Lead camps and campers safely through recreational activities with enthusiasm and professionalism according to training protocol and lesson plans.
5. Maintain an accurate head count of assigned student group at all times.
6. Communicate and follow up effectively with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisor.
7. Interface with peers, supervisors, and customers of various socio-economic backgrounds in a professional manner with guidance of the Day Camp Coordinator & Youth Ministry/Day Camp Director.
8. Maintain cleanliness, safe use, and inventory of different program areas and equipment.
9. Collect and disseminate information, forms, and waivers to participants for Kroc records.
10. Facilitate day camp check in and out procedures according to protocol.
11. Follow action plans for emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff.
12. Responsible for the maintenance of campers’ personal medications.
13. Keep camper and staff issues confidential.
14. Maintain regular, punctual work attendance. May be required to perform duties away from the Kroc Center Hawaii campus.
15. Understand, reflect, and communicate the Christian principles and mission of The Salvation Army and Kroc Center Hawaii.
16. Provide excellent internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for guests through professional and courteous behavior.
17. Adhere to dress code and maintain a professional image.
18. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
19. Maintain the Kroc Center Hawaii’s Code of Ethics policy.
20. Attend staff meetings as required.
21. Perform other duties as assigned.

Have the ability to maintain a self-motivated and self- directed schedule along with the ability to address multiple projects in a timely and efficient manner.

Be positive, responsive, detail oriented and have the ability to take projects from beginning through completion.

Have the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The person in this position must be able to cultivate teamwork with staff and the facility as a whole.

Must be able to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. They must be able to work with limited supervision and in a team setting with other professionals.

Must be able to exercise good judgment and be comfortable taking initiative with projects.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.

Respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner.

Must possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work.
Able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals.

The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds.

The position requires talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor; talking on the telephone; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other worksites; requires communication via the latest technologies.

Equipment: Experience with current Microsoft software computer programs including Word, Excel, e-mail, internet, and standard office equipment and systems.

Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification preferred
