Organization Profile

The primary mission of the LCEF is to provide financial resources and related services for ministry, witness, and outreach of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.  In so doing it shall raise funds primarily through the issuance of corporate notes and other debt instruments.  Its assets shall be used exclusively for the following:  To provide financing and services for the acquisition of sites; the construction of facilities; the purchase of buildings and equipment; operating expenses; professional church worker education; the residential housing needs of professional church workers; and other purposes approved by its governing board consistent with the ministry and mission of the Synod under policies approved by the Board of Directors of the Synod.


Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to the Manager-Payroll & General Accounting.
  • Assists the Accounting Supervisor-Financial Reporting & Accounts Payable.
  • Works closely with various LCEF departments and other accounting personnel.
  • Works closely with LCMS accounting staff.


Essential Job Functions

The Accountant - Investor Payables provides senior accounting services in the maintenance of the general ledger which includes journal voucher preparation, complex clearing account reconciliations, bank account reconciliations, gift processing, aged receivable reporting, summarizing cash flow data, providing backup support during absences, and assistance with special projects as required.

  • Prepares daily journal vouchers related to the LCEF Investor Services processing.  Vouchered items include all wire transfer activity, check registers, lockbox receipts, gifts and non-cash items initiated by LCEF processors.
  • Prepares journal vouchers to record accruals and amortize prepaid expense items at month-end.
  • Prepares journal vouchers relating to miscellaneous charges, operating expenses and inter-company transactions.
  • Reconciles clearing accounts used by LCEF Investor Services, investigating and clearing any discrepancies.
  • Analyzes inter-company transactions, reconciles general ledger accounts and generates settling payment/invoice.
  • Reconciles general ledger cash accounts to bank statements, investigating and clearing any discrepancies with the corresponding bank.  Accounts assigned for reconciliation varies to enhance internal controls.
  • Maintains control over issued, voided and outstanding check data files sent to the bank and transmits them electronically to the bank on a daily basis.
  • Reviews invoice data entry received from various departments for accuracy and produces invoices for mailing to LCEF customers through the Accounts Receivable system.
  • Produces monthly statements for Accounts Receivable activity.
  • Analyzes accounts receivable payments received weekly and monthly for reporting to service departments.
  • Analyzes the Aged Receivable report for delinquencies and subsequent collection follow-up.
  • Prepares a monthly summary of large dollar transactions effecting investor payable accounts.
  • Performs daily and monthly reconciliation of cash flow data for the investor payables sub-ledger.
  • Reconciles Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable accounts monthly, includes researching and resolving discrepancies.
  • Prepares investor communication related to the Unclaimed Property filing and reports for annual filings.
  • Prepares reports and analysis as requested by supervisor.
  • Provides significant back-up assistance as required by supervisor.
  • Maintains manual of desk procedures to reflect currently used procedures.
  • Complies with revisions made from time to time, after mutual consultation, in this position description.

Shared Responsibilities

  • Reviews daily bank activity relating to wire transfers, cleared checks and ACH transactions, ensuring proper credit is received from the bank, and researches any problem areas.
  • Assists the Manager – Payroll & General Accounting with special projects.
  • Assists the Accounting Supervisor – Accounts Payable & Financial Reporting with the preparation of the annual audit work papers.

Education and Experience


  • Associates degree in accounting and three years accounting experience with a computerized accounting system.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting.
  • Active member of a Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod congregation.


Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Demonstrated understanding of the theory and application of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Demonstrate practical application of skills and experience in accounting, preferably banking or fund accounting.
  • Proficiency with processing and organizing e-mail and electronic correspondence.
  • Basic Microsoft Office Suite skills with emphasis on Excel.
  • Demonstrated initiative to identify, evaluate and resolve accounting problems.
  • Well organized, highly dependable, and detail conscious.
  • Self-starter, capable of sustaining high levels of activity throughout the day.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in confidential matters.
