Organization Profile

  • LCMS Communications is responsible for informing, reporting, and interpreting, in consultation with applicable officers and boards, the Synod's purpose, program, and positions to its members and for promoting an increased understanding on the part of the church's publics of the mission of the church and its positions and programs.


Reporting Relationships

  • The Managing Editor of The Lutheran Witness reports to the Director of Editorial Services.


Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees the content planning, story creation, editing, layout, and production of The Lutheran Witness
  • Strategically plans content of The Lutheran Witness, taking into account the church year, special events, contemporary issues, geographical coverage, Christian education, mission outreach, variety of format, and reader research and feedback.
  • Commissions writers and, to a lesser extent, photographers, maintaining contact from assignment through publication.
  • Reviews unsolicited articles for possible inclusion in The Lutheran Witness.
  • Acquires permissions and reprint rights as required.
  • Gathers and prepares material for regular columns and departments in The Lutheran Witness.
  • Sees to it, working through support staff, that articles are submitted to Doctrinal Review and that all necessary changes are made. Also works with support staff to ensure the payment of honoraria, fees, and invoices related to the content of The Lutheran Witness.
  • Maintains a current listing of available freelance writers and photographers.
  • Handles Lutheran Witness-related correspondence, both print and email.
  • Orchestrates the periodic production of special or expanded issues of the Witness, such as the annual "State of the Synod" issue.
  • Commissions and edits articles for The Lutheran Witness website (blog).  Works with the department's Web team in maintaining this site.
  • Edits and manages Lutheran Witness social-media content.
  • Prepares regular, timely updates about current and upcoming authors and topics featured in The Lutheran Witness for KFUO (gives to Executive Director of Communications for distribution).
  • Prepares timely updates about present and upcoming authors and topics featured in The Lutheran Witness for the Office of the President, LCMS unit executives, the Council of Presidents, Board of Directors, and department managers (gives to Executive Director for distribution).
  • Oversees catechetical projects--one such responsibility being the editorship of the online Journal of Lutheran Mission.
  • Assists with writing projects--for Lutherans Engage the World, Reporter, the President's Office, etc.--as assigned.
  • Keeps abreast of mission and ministry activities within the Synod, maintaining contact with ministry offices and key departments and commissions.
  • Participates with the staff of LCMS Communications in long-range planning, development of reports, etc
  • Complies with revisions made from time to time, after mutual consultation, in this position description.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in a communications-related field, preferably journalism (or English with a minor in journalism, etc.).
  • Formal theological education highly desirable.
  • A minimum of three years of practical experience in a communications field related to journalism. 


Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Extreme aptitude in written and oral communications.
  • Capability and interest in writing and editing as evidenced by published works or other written materials.
  • Ability to work with people both within and outside the church.
  • Broad-based biblical knowledge and a solid understanding of LCMS doctrine, practice, positions, structure, history, governance, etc.
  • Commitment to accuracy, integrity, and clarity in the presentation of information.
  • A strong sense of graphical quality (i.e., good taste, flair, sensitivity, and judgment in putting together covers and story layouts).
  • A knack for composing captivating story titles, teaser copy and subheads. 
  • Appreciation of deadlines and the ability to meet them.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Active membership in an LCMS congregation, faithful to the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, and supportive of the Synod's Constitution, Bylaws, and policies.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • The Managing Editor, The Lutheran Witness has no direct reports.
