Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to the Vice President of Counselor Performance and Training or his/her designee of the LCMS Foundation.
  • Reports activities to the LWML Planned Giving Council and LWML President.

Essential Job Functions

  • Executes a Gift Planning Strategy that details major and secondary goals.  Assumes responsibility for the success of work plans and for achieving agreed-upon financial activity and gift production objectives.
  • Personally visits prospects regarding charitable planning and invites them to consider a gift plan which could include a direct gift and/or a revocable or irrevocable instrument.
  • Implements individual gift plans based on scriptural stewardship principles.  This can be accomplished through building Christian relationships through centers of influence, interest sessions, conventions, or any appropriate gathering.
  • Maintains and continually improves knowledge and expertise in gift planning and all relevant principals and concepts in charitable giving.  Complies with revisions to responsibilities as needed to fulfill the Foundation's and LWML's mission.
  • Maintains knowledge of LWML mission and vision, organizational structure, and mission grant recipients for each biennium.  Stays up to date on LWML's goals and objectives, programs, and special events.
  • At the invitation of the LWML President, attends national LWML Board meeting to educate Board members about the purpose and outcomes of LWML's Gifts of Love Legacy Circle.  Encourages Board members to consider legacy gifts for LWML.  Provides regular reports to Board members about Gifts of Love and Legacy Circle activity and results.
  • Connects with LWML District presidents to communicate the purpose and history of the Gifts of Love planned giving ministry and to encourage gift planning presentations for their individual districts, zones and societies.
  • Conducts presentations on gift planning at National and District conventions, zone events, congregational society meetings, and other gatherings to identify and visit with interested people about charitable planning.  Ability to articulate information accurately and clearly in person, in writing and by phone.  Effective in a variety of formal presentations.
  • Participates regularly in Planned Giving Council meetings to give updates, suggestions and activities that may be helpful to the gift planning ministry.  Assists in preparing meeting agendas when appropriate.
  • Seeks qualified volunteers to be Gift Planning Advocates for their individual districts to help promote the Gifts of Love ministry and assist the Gift Planning Counselor with displays and interest sessions throughout their district.  Maintains regular contact with volunteer Gift Planning Advocates and Supporters to educate and motivate them about the processes of gift planning.
  • Works with the other LWML Gift Planning Counselors to plan and implement agenda for annual training sessions for the Gift Planning Advocates and Supporters.
  • Occasionally, submits articles on gift planning to LUTHERAN WOMAN'S QUARTERLY and to newsletter editors in those districts in which no Gift Planning Advocates exist.
  • Fosters a collaborative spirit and works in concert with LWML Gift Planning Couselors to provide a cohesive and comprehensive team approach to serve the LWML.
  • Accepts mutual professional supervision and direction provided by the appropriate leadership of the LCMS Foundation and LWML.  Maintains close working relationships with the executives and representatives of LCMS Foundation and LWML.  Assists other ministries in the region as requested.  Relates to, assists and coordinates with other Foundation Gift Planning Counselors, volunteers and other individuals and entities as authorized by the Foundation's Vice President and LWML appointee.
  • Overnight domestic travel required including weekends.
  • Effecitve user of IT systems and collaborative tools; skilled in use of MS Office suite.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.  Three or more years of proven experience in gift planning or fund development.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Has a strong Christian faith and a working knowledge of the LCMS.  Possesses integrity, people skills, communicaiton skills, an ability to motivate others, professional discretion and judgement in confidential matters, a willingness and ability to travel and is an active member in an LCMS congregation.
