The Mission Advancement unit works closely with Synod’s Communications unit to support the mission and ministry efforts of the Office of National Mission, the Office of International Mission, and Pastoral Education, which all report to the Chief Mission Officer. The Chief Mission Officer, on behalf of the President, shall supervise fundraising activity according to the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Synod.

 

Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Manager, Volunteers.

 

Essential Job Functions

The Volunteer Advancement assistant will further our efforts in the areas of volunteer recruitment, training, management, recognition and evaluation. This position will provide support for daily operational support for Volunteer Connection volunteer and Manager. This position will assist in developing solid skills in the volunteer management with programming built of best practices. Additional responsibilities may occur to further develop our department’s capabilities to support other LCMS volunteer ministries through data research and integration with efforts to monitor data through quality controls for ministries to have a more robust and efficient means of coordinating their volunteers.

  • Assist in implementing a volunteer plan with strategies to address the needs and management of volunteer.
  • Contribute in reviewing and maintaining the LCMS Volunteer Handbook.
  • Coordinate with Manager to assist in managing, scheduling and project training for volunteers.
  • Assist in supervision of volunteer projects at the International Center.
  • Help ensure appropriate staff processes and/or supervision is present to facilitate successful project completion. This includes establishing appropriate directions, sufficient logistics, supplies and tools for project completion. 
  • Monitors projects for performance management to maintain a standard of service. 
  • Coordinate with Volunteer Manager updates needed to volunteer roster and hours served.
  • Provide feedback in areas of potential improvement in volunteer recruitment, cultivation and utilization of volunteers for the benefit of other offices and units within the International Center (Office of International Mission, Office of National Mission, etc).
  • Provide feedback on volunteer recognition plan and educational opportunities to promote advocacy and retention.
  • Assist in fellowship coordination from flier development, mailing invitations, coordinating tours, assist in communicating with presenters and provide onsite volunteer engagement during the events.
  • Collaborate with Volunteer Manager on the creation of newsletter content on a quarterly basis.
  • Seek and engage multiple ministries to develop volunteer projects.
  • Collect, record, analyze, or verify data and information from various sources.
  • Monitor quality controls on data entry and research to analyze and identify opportunities and efficiencies.

Associated Duties:

  • Be an advocate for a Culture of Service within the International Center. Support and strengthen volunteer managers with systems build on best practices, promote professional development, develop a resource-sharing network and unify the LCMS volunteerism messaging with it diverse opportunities.
  • Assist in Volunteer Hub implementation and ongoing support for the volunteer management software.
  • Help coordinate National Volunteer Month efforts to foster awareness in service opportunities and resources available and work through strategic ministry partners to integrate volunteerism into the overall stewardship and engagement effort.
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree (bachelor’s is preferred).
  • Volunteer management and coordination experience.
  • Experience in Nonprofit Management and Leadership/Nonprofit Administration, Social Work.
  • Project development coordination experience, preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and grow interpersonal relationships.
  • Skill to train and supervise volunteers and staff on projects.
  • Highly motivated, positive person who is able to energize volunteers and staff
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects with varying timelines and deadlines.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Previous Database experience a plus.
  • Detail-oriented is critical to multiple tasks that require analytical and technical skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent work ethic is essential.
  • Function as an integral part of a high-performance team.
