Reporting Relationships

  • Assistant Vice President, Ministry Engagement reports to the Vice President and Chief Marketing & Ministry Engagement Officer.


General Summary

The AVP, Ministry Engagement builds authentic relationships leading to retention, growth and business development. This requires establishing a deep understanding of customer needs and holding a genuine interest in helping customers solve their business challenges. The ability to hold a long-term perspective while leading teams to achieve short-term goals is critical.


Essential Job Functions

  • Customer Engagement
  • Cultivates strategic relationships across the ministries of the LCMS, including partnerships with District representatives, key leaders within segments, and Influencers.
  • Serves as a trusted partner with key ministry leaders and influencers.
  • Functions as a ministry advocate within CPS, collaborating with other CPS leaders to ensure customer needs are met.
  • Provides feedback to appropriate internal parties and helps champion change to improve processes, products and customer engagement.
  • Strategy and Planning
  • Sets strategy for Ministry Engagement team to ensure they accomplish goals through account retention and growth, business development and relationship management. 
  • Builds credibility and trust across the organization as a leader who is deeply connected with customers and their needs, which informs the organization’s sales and business development initiatives.
  • Works closely with leadership of various internal teams and vendors to ensure continuity, implementation and execution of sales and business development strategy, plans and goals / metrics.
  • Sales and business development program design, development and implementation
  • Establishes retention, sales and business development goals across customer segments and territories, including overseeing the development of a strong sales pipeline. 
  • Develops strategies with Directors to ensure account team creates trusted partnerships with ministries, retains existing customers and closes new business opportunities, ultimately reaching CPS goals.
  • Uses expertise in networking, relationship building, business development and management to develop relationships within / across all levels to retain and grow our base of members within LCMS ministries.
  • Clarifies, implements and builds on a common approach and process for driving all facets of sales and account management across the organization to ensure success.
  • Participates in account planning and relationship mapping sessions to ensure deep knowledge of customers and their needs, and to help coach Directors and account team members.


  • Leads the Team
    • Communicates and reports regularly to CPS CEO and Executive Team on ministry engagement, retention, sales and business development goal progress.
    • Attracts, recruits and retains top talent; motivates and leads a high-performance team; provides mentoring and development as a cornerstone for succession planning.
    • As a transformative leader, rallies internal teams to achieve highest level of success aligned with Marketing and Ministry Engagement divisional goals and CPS mission, vision and values.
    • Serves as coach and mentor for consultative, solution-based account service and business consulting.
    • Is a customer engagement, sales and business development role-model for team leaders and staff with effective sales and business development behavior, attitudes and values.
    • Effectively manages the budget in coordination and is responsible for financial accountability of contract commitments, return on investment and operating as a sound financial steward of CPS resources.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; MBA or equivalent master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in business management, with emphasis on sales and/or business development.
  • 10+ years of experience in leading multiple, complex projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing business initiatives, especially sales and business development strategies and programs; proven effectiveness in leadership role.
  • An understanding of the LCMS and/or experience working with ministries is valued.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
