Reporting Relationships

  • Financial Wellness Educator reports to Director of Worker Wellness, with indirect reporting to senior administration staff of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, and Concordia Theological Seminary Ft. Wayne, IN


Essential Job Functions

  • Promotes financial life-cycle stewardship through seminars, presentations, and one-on-one relationships to encourage both financial stability and wellness among church workers and ministries.
  • Presents and facilitates financial planning and pre-retirement workshops for church workers at all stages of ministry.  
  • Represents Concordia Plan Services (CPS) as onsite content specialist/educator at each of the two seminaries of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
    • At both seminaries:
      • Conducts financial seminars and one-on-one personal finance meetings with traditional, 4-year students
      • Meets with faculty as needed for one-on-one personal finance meetings and pre-retirement planning.
    • At Concordia Seminary St. Louis:
      • Leads Financial Peace University courses (twice per year, nine sessions per course)
    • At Concordia Seminary Ft. Wayne
      • Leads seminars on Financial Literacy program in both spring and fall for 1st, 2nd and 4th year students.
  • Collaborates with other educators and the Communications/Marketing department to develop, discover, and utilize educational modules for personal finance and pre-retirement education.
  • Travel required, 40%.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or 5 years equivalent experience in communications, marketing or related field.
  • Experience in personal finance and retirement planning.
  • Experience in public speaking. 
  • Experience in employee benefits, non-profit or faith-based organizations preferred.
  • Ordained or commissioned minister of religion preferred.


Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Intermediate knowledge and application of health, pension, and 403(b) / 401 (k) plans and Social Security is preferred. 
  • Ability to communicate employee benefits in clear and understandable detail.
  • Capacity to interpret legal benefit plan documents. 
  • Ability to plan, oversee and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Capable of selecting the most effective communication and marketing strategies and tactics for assigned projects.
  • Ability to articulate information simply and concisely in person, over the phone and in writing, and to reflect CPS values (integrity, compassion, excellence, stewardship, accountability) in all internal and external communications. 
  • Interacts effectively with a wide variety of people, respectfully maintains the dignity of others, willingness to offer others personal incite and perspectives, can maintain confidences about personal information shared as examples or questions.
  • Ability to navigate effectively in regulated industry and with complex organizations required.
  • Steadfastly pushes self for results, self-motivated with the ability to effectively prioritize and execute multiple tasks with minimal supervision, maintains focus on organizational goals.

  • Highly motivated to participate in professional associations and professional development.
  • An active member in good standing of a Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod congregation is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of the structure of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and its related entities is preferred.
