The Office of International Mission, which relates to the Board for International Mission and implements its policies, is responsible to the President of the Synod through the Chief Mission Officer for the work of the Synod in foreign countries as stated in the Bylaws.

Reporting Relationships

  • Organizationally relates as part of the staff of the Office of International Mission.
  • Direct accountability to the Director of Business Management
  • Interacts with staff members in the Office of National Mission and the Office of International Mission.
  • Work relationships will also include other departments of the Synod, entities and partners as they relate to specific programs and projects.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serves as a subject matter expert and consultant on domestic and international witness and mercy grants, as well as other grants and scholarships, for the Office of International Mission (OIM).
  • Works with OIM and ONM leadership to develop granting processes that aim to increase effectiveness and stewardship and reduce risk to the LCMS. 
  • Creates grant solicitation materials as appropriate.
  • Receives and reviews all grant applications; creates a written application for requests made without documentation.  Forwards all grant applications to the appropriate staff for review and input and provides interpretation and guidance as needed.   
  • Awards grants as authorized and facilitates by processing and recording all payments, monitoring reporting requirements and maintaining files.
  • Informs internal and external stakeholders of grant processing status, award notifications, payments, distribution of reports and other related granting activity.
  • Processes and monitors all transactions to the pledged payable account; coordinates related tasks with accounting and provides balance information to program directors.
  • Relates to and provides guidance for congregation and social ministry organization project directors, pastors and CEOs who are potential grantees.
  • Facilitates discussion and internal awareness with OIM staff, ONM staff, LCMS communications staff and LCMS fund development staff related to granting.
  • Represents the LCMS among mainline counterparts and other non-LCMS or pan-Lutheran granting entities as directed.

Education and Experience

  • Active member of a Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod congregation, faithful to the Holy Scriptures, and the Lutheran Confessions, and supportive of the Synod’s Constitution, Bylaws and policies.
  • 3-5 years related experience.
  • Experience in assessing grant requests or financial proposals.
  • Familiarity with accounting terminology and practices. 
  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Able to effectively manage time, multiple projects, deadlines and requests. 
  • Capable of efficiently administering an area of responsibility.
  • Comfortable working within a dynamic, fast-paced environment. 
  • Experience working with a variety of computer programs and data management. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly across cultures.
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as, collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with integrity.   


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
