The Mission Advancement unit works closely with Synod’s Communications unit to support the mission and ministry efforts of the Office of National Mission, the Office of International Mission, and Pastoral Education, which all report to the Chief Mission Officer. The Chief Mission Officer, on behalf of the President, shall supervise fundraising activity according to the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Synod.

 

Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Manager, Grants and Foundations

 

Essential Job Functions

This position provides essential support to the organization’s grant-proposal writing and grants reporting function within Mission Advancement, including accurate record-keeping and process fulfillment. It expands the capacity of the LCMS to submit proposals before all eligible funding agencies, foundations and organizations beyond the sole grants position within Mission Advancement.  Essential duties will include:

  • Prospective granting (funding sources) research.
  • Grant-writing.
  • The capturing and compiling of information from within the organization that is required to submit a professional grant proposal.
  • Proposal draft reviews and editing.
  • Proposal submission and response tracking.
  • Funder customer-service such as providing status reports, answer questions, maintain up-to-date contact information, etc.
  • Participating in meetings relating to grants and funders, as directed by the Manager- Grants and Foundations.
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Five or more years advancement/fund-raising experience, and at least two years’ experience grants research and proposal writing
  • Associate’s degree (bachelor’s is preferred)
  • Past membership in a professional association (ALDE, AFP, etc.) is highly desired

  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, able to manage time and resources effectively and efficiently
  • Solid command of the English language (usage, punctuation, grammar)
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in using various tools to research potential grant sources
  • Above-average knowledge of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and it’s organizational structure, partner groups and auxiliaries, and doctrine/theology
  • Functions well in an environment of deadlines and timelines; demonstrated ability to meet or surpass deadline expectations
  • A self-starter, seeking out the next task or project rather than waiting for direction
