Organization Profile

  • The office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is vest with the general management and supervision of the Synod's business and legal affairs, including provision for the coordination of policies and directive of the Synod authorized by its Constitution, Bylaws, and resolutions, and for coordination and evaluation of plans and policies of boards and commissions (Bylaw 3.4.2).  The CAO provides executive leadership on behalf of the Synod's Board of Directors in carrying out the programmatic, administrative, and financial functions of the national Synod.
  • Information Technology (IT) manages LCMS information technology services, resources, and strategy for LCMS Corporate Synod.  Services include: network administration, data management and application hosting, network security management, software development and maintenance, e-mail, internet access, web application hosting, personal productivity and collaboration, IT support desk (help desk and microcomputer support), business process analysis and management, technical training, and IT project and policy management.
  • The Facilities team is responsible for maintaining the interior, exterior and operational state of the 1333 building and property.  This responsibility includes managing facility related capital projects and extends triennially to include the venue of the LCMS National Convention.  This team works closely with Human Resources, Senior Director, Event Plananing and Procurement, and Meeting and Reception Services in overlapping areas of responsibility including security, access control, safety and catered events to provide a safe, comfortable and professional work environment for employees and visitors.
  • The Copy & Mail Services team provides photocopying, printing and paper processing, mail and package sending and receiving, and loading dock services to the LCMS, Concordia Plan Services and the LCMS Foundation.  The team also provides mail and package delivery services to The Lutheran Church Extension Fund.  Copy and Mail Services functions as part of a group of service organizations that collaborate to maximize their collective stewardship.
  • Meeting and Reception Services is responsible for providing support services to the entities of the LCMS International Center properties and other corporate organizations of the church in their support of the LCMS mission and ministry objectives.  Meeting and Reception Services provides reception services, meeting planning, administrative and management services to The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.  These services include providing reception services at the International Center, coordination of group travel, budgeting, air, hotel, food and beverage coordination, meeting planning, ground transfers, account reconciliation and preparation of group history as well as communication to the International Center departments and constituencies.

Reporting Relationships

  • The Executive Director, Operations reports to the LCMS Corporate Synod Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).
  • Working as part of the Synod Service Unit leadership team, this position is accountable to the Synod's ministry leaders and the other members of the Service Unit leadership team with whom close collaboration is imperative.  The Synod Service Unit leadership team is led by the CAO and comprised of this position as well as the Executive Director of Human Resources and Senior Director, Event Planning and Procurement.

Essential Job Functions

The Executive Director, Operations provides leadership and direction to the LCMS Information  Technology (IT), Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services departments.  The leadership responsibilities of this position include:

  • Engaging in strategic planning with ministry and the other service unit leaders, and developing and/or adjusting the IT, Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services strategies to align with the strategies of those leaders.
  • Ensuring that the services provided and/or managed by the IT, Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services departments match the current and future needs of the ministries it serves.
  • Managing the delivery of IT, Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services per industry standards and best practices with the best possible stewardship via an appropriate mix of internal and/or external staff.
  • Developing and maintaining exceptional leadership and staff teams.
  • Collaborating with the HR and other service teams in the delivery of exceptional services.
  • Establishing annual IT, Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services budgets that align with Synod's strategic plans.
  • Managing expenses with the best possible stewardship.
  • Engaging with Synod leadership in establishing and managing project approval and prioritization processes.
  • Managing IT, Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services related technical training, contracts and vendors.
  • Managing IT, Facilities, Copy & Mail Services and Meeting and Reception Services related policies and procedures in compliance with Synod and industry standards.
  • Assist the Chief Administrative Officer with project management on behalf of the LCMS Board of Directors as needed.
  • Works closely with the Senior Director, Event Planning and Procurement to coordinate hotel and travel contracts with Meeting and Reception Services.
  • Manage relations with onsite vendors, i.e. Elite Cuisine.

Education and Experience

  • MBA or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in IT preferably in the management and administration in a service industry.
  • Experience in, or knowledge of, facilities, copy center and shipping and event planning.
  • Active membership in an LCMS congregation is strongly desired, but not required.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Skilled at identifying and evaluating new technological developments and gauging their appropriateness for the LCMS; has a natural passion for staying current with technology.
  • Ability to listen effectively to business stakeholders and provide effective IT, facilities and event planning tools and practices to enhance their business outcomes while also managing costs and risks.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate major projects spanning various areas of responsibility.
  • Travel as necessary to fulfill primary responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Supervises the IT Directors, the Director of Facilities, the Manager of Copy & Mail Services and the Meeting and Reception Services staff.
