Organization Profile

The Office of National Mission coordinates and supports domestic ministries that serve congregations and schools through the districts of the Synod (Bylaw 3.8.2.3).

 

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to the Director of Youth Ministry, Office of National Mission.
  • Reports to the Youth Gathering Program Director for LCMS Youth Gathering matters.

Other Relationships:

  • Serves as a member of the LCMS Youth Ministry Office staff.
  • Serves as an ex officio member of the Youth Gathering executive team.
  • Collaborates with appropriate LCMS Communication staff (at direction of the Director of Production) on projects.  Understands procedures for media production in place in the LCMS International Center and sees to meeting expectations for writing, scripting, production, doctrinal review and working through various systems for project completion for all Youth Ministry media and publications projects.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees production of all Youth Gathering and Youth Ministry online communication on social media, including developing, implementing, and maintaining a strategic content strategy for Youth Ministry’s and the Youth Gathering’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, etc.).
  • Works proactively to identify Youth Ministry and Gathering communications and media projects, developing a comprehensive plan and strategy to address the needs, managing the projects towards completion to support LCMS youth ministry programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with LCMS Communications on youth ministry’s presence in the Reporter and other LCMS publications, on updating the Youth and Young Adult webpage on www.lcms.org, and provides LCMS Communications with news releases and information for LCMS Youth Ministry efforts consistent with LCMS style, brand and practice.
  • Oversees production of all Gathering print and electronic, promotion and resource pieces, e.g. pre-Gathering poster, registration book, exhibitor and sponsorship packet, promotional materials, adult leader newsletter, the Gathering guidebook, Bible, program team needs, post-Gathering resources including the memory book, etc.
  • Oversees production of all Gathering online communicative pieces, namely all information on lcmsgathering.com and related websites, including structure, continual update and maintenance of sites.  Oversees the vendor selection, production, and data population of the Gathering App. 
  • Serves as the media director for the Youth Gathering.
  • Relates to Gathering artists, writers, producers, and designers before, during, and after the event.
  • Relates to Gathering and Youth Ministry video production.
  • Relates to other Gathering team planners in coordinating resource and communication efforts. 
  • Recruits and manages a media team of adults (contracted and volunteer) to serve as an on-site Gathering media team.
  • Assists in creation and distribution of Gathering incentives and soft goods, e.g. Gathering backpacks, wearables and logo ware.  
  • Collaborates with Gathering Program Director to organize, schedule, and promote instructional or informational communication including webinars and Gathering update emails.
  • Collaborates with LCMS Servant Event Director to publish Servant Event Bible study and worship resource including writing devotionals, creating ‘hands-on activity’ worksheets, proofreading, formatting, and assembling resource.
  • Assists in promoting and planning youth ministry events and resources, including representing the LCMS and youth ministry at events as directed.  Coordinates print and electronic promotions for youth ministry events, e.g. Youth Ministry Symposium, National Lutheran Youth Workers Conference, etc. Provides resource materials to help prepare other persons for presentations, including training speakers.
  • Collaborates with Youth Ministry Director to proofread, format and send monthly Youth Ministry E-Bulletin updates.
  • Assists the Gathering Director and Youth Ministry Director in preparing an annual media budget and monitoring expenses.
  • Assumes other responsibilities from the Director of Youth Ministry, the Associate Director for the LCMS Youth Gathering and/or the Executive Director, LCMS Office of National Mission.
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in communications, public relations, marketing or related field.
  • Theological training (or willingness to pursue).

  • Knowledge of Biblical theology and Lutheran doctrine and its practical application.
  • Active membership in an LCMS congregation, faithfulness to the Holy Scriptures and Lutheran Confessions and supportive of Synod’s constitution, bylaws and policies.
  • Knowledge of the Synod, preferably with experience and service to a Synod-related entity and/or experience in working with youth groups or other youth-focused organizations.
  • Demonstrated creativity, including design skills and graphic insight.
  • Understanding of current social media platforms and capacity and openness to utilize new platforms.
  • Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple teams of people.
  • Works well independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to review and adapt from previous projects and resources.
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of print and digital multi-media communications methods.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and familiarity with design tools such as Quark or InDesign.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required.
