The Mission Advancement unit of the LCMS works closely with Synod’s Communications unit to support the mission and ministry efforts of the Office of National Mission, the Office of International Mission, and Pastoral Education which all report to the Chief Mission Officer. The Chief Mission Officer, on behalf of the President, shall supervise fundraising activity of the national office according to the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Synod.

 

Reporting Relationships

 

  • Reports to the Executive Director, Mission Advancement.
  • Functions as the unit manager in partnership with or on behalf of the unit Executive Director.
  • Relates to, collaborates with and supports other directors and managers within Mission Advancement
  • Supervises select Mission Advancement staff and coordinates processes between specialized teams (sections) within Mission Advancement.
  • Working relationships will also include other departments of the Synod, entities and partners as they relate to specific programs and projects.

     

Essential Job Functions

 

The Associate Executive Director, Operations is responsible for the day-to-day activities and processes carried out by staff at the LCMS International Center, and fulfilling senior management duties such as planning, budgeting, reporting, problem resolution, team coordination and unit-to-unit communication.  The position is designed to allow the Executive Director of Mission Advancement to play a more active role in donor engagement and the facilitation of major gifts, grants and leadership participation in advancement work. The person occupying this position can expect to provide the following services and leadership:

  • Serve on the Mission Advancement management team (cabinet) to successfully plan and carry out the unit’s fund-raising and donor care plans. In the absence of the Executive Director, this position will lead cabinet and all team member meetings.
  • Provide the executive director of Mission Advancement with collegial support and counsel on all aspects of the unit’s work including long-range strategic and short-range tactical planning, development of case statements, enhancement of unit policies and procedures, staff and volunteer collaboration activities, counsel on publicity and public relations resources that involving LCMS Communications, and the reporting of fundraising performance. Offers candid input to the executive director regarding how to best manage all of the department’s human, material and financial resources.
  • Provide counsel to the unit’s mid-level donor care team.
  • Engage directly with contributors and other constituents by phone, email, text messaging and personal visits to assist with gift decisions, problem investigation and resolution, and donation processes.
  • Provide oversight and counsel to the unit’s gift operations team and member engagement teams through their managers, and the missionary network care and support team through its director.
  • Assist the executive director in completing all work required to develop the unit’s annual operating budget, including revenue projections and the cost of personnel and activities required to meet fundraising goals.
  • Qualified to serve as a mission advocate (gift officer), building relationships with a donors and prospective donors.  Designs and implements strategies and activities to move prospects and donors to higher levels of giving.  Serves as a model major gifts officer for other staff.
  • At the direction of the executive director assumes management responsibility for the funding of initiatives that do not fall readily into either the campaigns/special programs or direct response areas.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President, the Chief Mission Officer or the executive director of Mission Advancement.
Requirements

Education and Experience

 

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; a Master’s degree in a related field such as business administration is preferred
  • Rostered status with the LCMS as a commissioned minister is highly desired
  • Professional fund-raising certification is required (CFRE, CDE or equivalent)
  • Six or more years experience in fund development, including manager-level experience in a non-profit environment
  • Unquestionable ethical standards

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong working knowledge of Christian stewardship principles and the ability to apply those principles in a fundraising environment.
  • Ability to relate easily to clergy and lay leadership as well as to a variety of people in order to secure their interest, involvement and investment in the work of Synod.
  • Willing to travel frequently.
  • Knowledge of financial matters and a willingness to use technology to enhance productivity.

This position is responsible for directly supervising the following staff in Mission Advancement

  • Manager, Gift Operations
  • Donor Information Coordinator
  • (International Center) Volunteer Program Manager

 

This position is responsible for the day-to-day internal coordination of the following groups:

  • Volunteer Connection
  • Missionary Network Care and Support
  • Member Engagement (including gifts by phone program)
  • Mid-level donor and annual giving/pledge programs
  • Donor information and donor care line team
